This Month’s Focus: Benefits of a Green Thumb
It’s no surprise that the popularity of plants skyrocketed during the pandemic and is still going strong! This month’s focus is on all things green—how having a green thumb, or in today’s lingo, being a plant parent, can have excellent benefits for your well-being.
By the Numbers
- 66% of American households own at least 1 houseplant
- 1 in 3 people under 40 call themselves a “Plant Parent”
- 70% of plant parents talk to their plants
Detail
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many gravitated towards plant keeping as a way to cope with social distancing and focus on hobbies. Now? Plant parenting is in abundance. Plant parenting refers to anyone who cares for their plants as much as they would care for a pet or family member. Here are some green benefits of having a houseplant or simply having a green thumb:
- Natural air purifiers
- Improves your sense of wellbeing
- Helps you recover from mental fatigue
- Reduces stress
- May actually improve your focus and attention
Caring for and growing plants can be relaxing and soothing. If you are practicing a digital detox (staying off social media for a period of time), growing plants may be a great solution to help you stop being hyper-connected to your phone. Your outlook on work and life may just be a bit greener with a houseplant or two.
The Biophilia Hypothesis
Let’s talk science! Introduced in the 1980s, this concept focuses on the idea that humans are genetically geared to be attracted to nature.
It shares the notion that humans are healthier when they are connected to nature. Many companies such as Google and Amazon are incorporating nature aka plants into their architecture and offices.
