Risk Management Tip
Fleet Safety
As more people are getting outdoors to enjoy the summer, fleet drivers must be extra cautious to avoid pedestrian accidents. In 2012, on average, a pedestrian was killed every 2 hours and injured every 7 minutes in traffic crashes. Companies that have employees on the road, either in company cars or driving on company business, should take steps to ensure their drivers remain safe and vigilant behind the wheel.
- Companies should review their fleet safety programs and make sure that they address the issue of pedestrian safety in their practices and procedures.
- Drivers should be reminded to honor the speed limits, pay attention to traffic signals and defer to pedestrians who are approaching or have entered crosswalks.
- Remind employees to yield to traffic and pedestrians on the through road at T intersections without stop or yield signs.
- When turning right, be sure employees know to check for pedestrians crossing the street and bicyclists coming up behind them on the right.
