Risk Management Tip

Lightning Safety

Our Earth experiences 100 lightning flashes per second. The United States alone has over 40 million lightning strikes annually. Florida, with its almost invariable afternoon thunderstorms, is considered the lightning capital of the world. In fact, the afternoon is the most susceptible time of day for lightning to occur: two thirds of all lightning strikes occur between noon and 6pm. Avoid the risk of being struck by lightning by watching for developing thunderstorms and seeking safe shelter at the first sign of a storm. Almost one third of lightning-related injuries occur indoors, so be sure to stay away from windows and doors during a lightning storm.
